2008-01-01 [Sunrose]: To make sure everyone gets to read this:
I think the theme for a contest should be the holiday itself in general.
That leaves more room for interpretation in case some people celebrate it differently than others.
Especially as a try-out: the more difficult we make the theme, the more people might not bother to enter. We are seeing this trend more and more on official contests as well.

We have to think about:
1. How do we get people to enter?
2. What do we do when we get very little entries?
3. What do we do to reward the winners?

2008-01-01 [Atayemi]: 1. Ask very nicely to have the contest advertised on MC, or possibly a news story about the Festivals wiki itself. That way it might just interest people into helping out. Plus if it is on the news, everyone will see it, so there will be more of a chance of people entering. :)
2. Extend the deadline? I'm not sure..
3. Hmm.. hard one. There aren't any official badges for these contests is there? So maybe a little ribbon or something? A ribbon made into the style of the festival? Or even a little Easter egg for the Easter contest, a four leaf clover for the St. Patrick's contest and so on.

And I was thinking that the best art piece, poem and description can all be put together on this mainpage.
So it would kind of be similar to the Elftown Creature Marathon, but about Festivals instead.
And we'll be less strict here, open to all interpretations instead of the 'typical' interpretations.

Well, we can only see how far it goes. Personally I think it will be a big hit. There was word of doing something like this on Elf12, but there just wasn't enough people on there. :/ But here, ET is more popular, so I can see a lot of entries. Not thousands for the St. Patrick's Day one, but for Easter I can see a few.

Yes, 2 and 3 (going back to your three questions, Sun) are the biggest things to deal with, 2 in particular. If we get participation, then 3.

In most of the wikis I've started, I think the worst thing I've had to deal with is how to advertise it to attract people to it. I personally feel unable to completely fulfill that task, which means I may not volunteer to create something. I don't exactly have the programs availible to make great banners, like I'd like, but alas, we can't all have what we want.

Apologies; I'm ranting. To be brutally honest, I would say that we need just to post it in our profiles, sometimes our diaries, as I've often seen and occasionally done, as well as have a news story run on it. I could also see it as being a featured wiki or something similar. Even our contests could be featured, if not official.

Oh, and I'd be willing to create and run a New Years festival, if you're willing to allow me the pleasure.

As for advertisement, I just brought it up to see if someone might have a sparkly idea that we can use. If not, then we'll revert to the methods that you mentioned and are often used :)

2008-01-07 [Janouk]: How do we get people to enter (besides advertising on Mainstreet)? - You could create a groupe of advertisers (for these contests but maybe for Official ET contests as well) who'll advertise a certain contest in their mood/house/diary for a certain amount of time, on a certain day or whatever. (it could be like a working day, surfing around Elftown with a contest in your mood would certainly attract a few contestants..) I do not mean that they'd spam the place, but just mention it somewhere in their house.

so you don't have to put the whole poem in the poll, but just the link to the poem (having the wikipage being named after the poem, for example).
